Heart of the Land

Heart of the Land

In what felt like the middle of nowhere, a sleepy cluster of little wooden houses standing on stilts by a stream — this is Soblan, a small indigenous Karen village tucked into the mountains of northern Thailand.

Although there aren't any shopping malls or convenience stores, and the closest 7-11 is about half an hour away, this community has everything it needs. For the past four generations, this indigenous Karen community has called this forest home — here in what they call Patii, or uncle, or teacher.

A photo essay on the science and spirituality of indigenous climate solutions. This eye-opening journey and learning experience was made possible by the support of Climate Tracker, Patii Taayae Chudboonming, and the Soblan community.
